Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What are "non-OHIP" covered services or "uninsured services"?

OHIP pays physicians for most medical services delivered to patients. Services not covered by OHIP or another insurance plan are called uninsured services.
Non-OHIP covered services are those services provided to patients that are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Your physician will request a payment from you for those services. It is the patient's responsibility to pay for uninsured services.
The Ministry covers all insured medically necessary services provided by physicians, however, it does not pay for services that are not medically necessary.
These may include:
-
writing sick notes
-
cosmetic procedures
-
charges for missed appointments
-
prescription renewals
-
completing forms for daycare, insurance, legal or employment purposes, or
-
if your health card is not valid on the day of your appointment
How are the uninsured fee rates determined?

When fees are charged for uninsured services, they are based on the Ontario Medical Association's suggested fees as found in the most current edition of the OMA Physician's Guide to Third Party and Other Uninsured Services.
Why am I being charged if my doctor didn’t see me?
Charges may apply for services that do not require a visit with your doctor, such as prescription renewals, completing forms, or missed appointments. These tasks still require staff and physician time.
What is a block fee?
Instead of paying separately for each uninsured service, patients may choose to pay an annual “block fee.” This covers most non-OHIP services for the year and gives you unlimited access without having to pay each time. It is a convenient option for patients who expect to need services such as forms, prescription renewals, and notes during the year.
Do I have to pay a block fee?
No. Paying a block fee is optional. Patients who do not pay the block fee will be billed individually for each uninsured service as they arise.
What if I cannot afford to pay?
If you are unable to pay for a service, please let our staff know. We will review each situation individually. However, we are required to charge for uninsured services, as these are not funded by OHIP.
What happens if I miss an appointment?
Missed or late-cancelled appointments may result in a fee. This is because missed appointments prevent other patients from being seen and impact clinic operations.
Can I claim these fees through my private insurance?
Some private insurance plans cover certain uninsured services. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider. If requested, we can provide a receipt so you can submit a claim.
